These images are not depictions of a moment. They are souvenirs... mementos... notes that my hands took while my consciousness savored a place. The production of these paintings was not my goal. They are byproducts of the goal, which is to attain the state of mind depicted. I paint en plein air not because I find the results more effective or because I attain truer colors or more convincing shapes. Nor do I paint en plein air because I have an irrational attraction to sand fleas or frostbitten fingers. I paint en plein air because the goal is to be part of the environment, to exercise my natural role in the natural world. I do what I do while the grass does what the grass does and the bugs do what they do, and the wind does what the wind does. And then, when the light fades, I go home... with these mementos.
