Arts Center band to present Winter Concert
1.1.2011

Looking for a fun, affordable afternoon of symphonic music? The Norwich Arts Center presents the NAC Band, who will be performing its annual Winter Concert on Sunday, January 9, at 2:00 PM in the Donald Oat Theater. The band’s program is diverse arrangement of instrumental compositions—ranging from classical to contemporary—and admission to the event is free.

The band has gathered some very talented musicians together from the area so it’s definitely worth checking out and taking advantage of the free admission.

This concert's featured soloist will be trumpeter Jose Cordero. A well known trumpet soloist in the southeastern CT area, Cordero has trained some of the finest trumpet players in the area schools. Cordero also has a thriving private studio in Mystic.

The ensemble will perform an eclectic selection of band music which will include: "American Flourish", "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers", "Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest" and the "Washington Post March".

Conductor

In his third year as conductor of the band, Robert Clowes will again lead the group for this performance. He is a retired music educator who is in his 51st year in education. He is currently the permanent substitute teacher at Fitch High School in Groton. He also adjudicates clarinet and saxophone auditions for regional middle school, high school and all state.

The NAC Band, who also rehearses at the Donald L. Oat Theater, performed their seasonal concert in the same venue last year in January. They have also performed at Dodd Stadium for the Independence Day Celebration in July 2010 and for the Welcoming Ceremony of the Vietnam Traveling Wall the summer of 2009 at the Howard T Brown Park.

Rehearsals for the 2010/2011 season began in September in the Oat. The NAC Band rehearses every Thursday from 7 to 8:30 PM in the Donald Oat Theater. The ensemble is composed of middle school, high school, collegiate and adult musicians. Membership is open to all. No auditions are required.
