Remember regional artists when holiday shopping
11.20.2010

Thanksgiving fast approaches, and arts and culture organizations in Eastern Connecticut have much to be thankful for.

With all the challenges of the past year, we have often learned to be more creative with the way we run our businesses and keep moving forward, and for that, we have been rewarded. Though we hate to ask for more, there is one more thing each of the area’s organizations hopes for: that holiday shoppers will remember them when celebrating the season and doing their holiday shopping.

Of course, before you even think about shopping the galleries and shops and other unique locations, take the end of the day on Black Friday and enjoy time with friends and family. Bright lights, music, song and, of course, a visit from a jolly old elf begin what is sure to be a great season in the region.

Downtown Norwich lights up Friday during The Tree Lighting from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, and there is something for everyone. The Norwich Arts Center will be hosting an open house with food, hot chocolate, music and holiday cheer to share with visitors. Though donations are not required, visitors can enjoy perusing art in both the NAC Gallery and NAC Gallery Too!, the latter an art gift shop for early holiday shoppers. This is NAC’s opportunity to welcome old friends and invite new ones to join us in the gallery for a little warmth and fun. In addition, watch for the opening of Santa’s Village on Main Street with the support of Norwich Public Utilities, open galleries and eateries, and participation from many of Norwich’s arts and cultural organizations.

As you enter the season and get the gift shopping into full gear, please be sure to remember through your gift giving of items from local arts groups helps support the arts and artists. Tickets to a play or musical event at one of the local venues make unique gifts, as do art objects for the home or office from one of the local galleries.

Coming up

First Friday comes soon after with gallery openings at the NAC Gallery’s “Holiday Show 2010: A Sale of Small Holiday Treasures,” as well as other gallery openings throughout the downtown. In addition, Cool Cat Jazz makes a triumphant return to NAC with their First Friday performance in the Donald L. Oat Theater. For details on any number of options, visit the Norwich Arts Center website at www.norwicharts.org

Supporting the arts supports us all and, again, thank you for your ongoing support throughout the year. We do hope through one of the wonderful arts organizations in our region, you will find the perfect holiday gifts.
