Rita Dawley

Rita Dawley is a mixed media artist whose work primarily consists of imagery that appears both primitive and exotic. Dawley renders people, trees, and animals in bright colors and design, usually in large drawings divided into uneven segments, an almost kaleidoscopic crazy-quilt, which she refers to as "organized chaos." The imagery often takes on a narrative tone, includes the figure, and focuses on specific characters or themes.

Artist Statement:

My work consists of both my inner and outer life. It is an intimate portrayal of my journey but I have only recognized it that way in retrospect.

My expression or the mood of the night or day will be in a painting through emotive markings of color and images. There is also a quilt effect with primitive symbols and domesticated folk images and scenes. My narrative painting may confuse the casual observer as I use many worlds in one mind and put them on paper as a journey. I clearly reflect my emotions and moods through humor, whimsy, fantasy, and color.

I would hope the viewers might respond with their own imagination and primitive instincts of story telling while they cruise through mine.
